Flexo (Flexography)
Flexo is the workhorse of the label industry. It uses flexible relief plates (usually rubber or photopolymer) and works much like a high-speed sophisticated rubber stamp.
Best for: High-volume production and labels on rolls.
The Look: Very clean and vibrant, though historically it struggled with extremely fine gradients compared to Litho. Modern "HD Flexo" has closed that gap significantly.
Materials: It’s incredibly versatile. It can print on plastic, metallic films, cellophane, and paper.
Litho (Lithography / Offset)
Litho uses flat metal plates and the principle that water and oil don't mix. The image is "offset" from a plate to a rubber blanket, then to the paper.
Best for: Premium, high-detail labels, often for wine, cosmetics, or high-end gourmet food (like that balsamic vinegar project).
The Look: Exceptional image clarity, smooth gradients, and "rich" colors. It provides a more "artistic" or high-end feel.
Materials: Primarily used for paper-based labels. It doesn't handle non-porous plastics as easily as Flexo does.
Retouching old photos is a specialized form of digital restoration. Unlike modern portraits where the goal is "perfection," the goal with historical photos is preservation—honoring the original while undoing the damage caused by time, light, and storage.
